Homemade Amish Sweet Bread Recipe
This recipe is a little more complex than the previous one, but don’t let that scare you away! This recipe produces bread that works great for sandwiches, french toast, and snacks. If you would like your bread to have a soft top, then give it a good brush with some melted butter when it’s hot from the oven. If crispy bread is more your jam, then giving the bread a spritz with water a few times while it’s baking will create that crusty top.

Ingredients
- ¼ c. warm water (95-110°F)
- 1 tbsp. active dry yeast
- 2 c. milk room temperature
- 1 tbsp. brown sugar
- 1 tsp. salt
- 2 tbsp. butter room temperature
- 6 c. bread flour You can substitute with all-purpose, but your bread won't rise as high.
Instructions
- Begin by mixing the water and yeast together in a large bowl. Then add in the milk, brown sugar, salt, and bugger and give everything a good stir. Next, mix in 4 cups of flour a cup at a time, stirring well between each addition. The dough should clump together but still be quite sticky. Then roll the dough onto a floured work surface and knead for about ten minutes until your dough is smooth and firm. You can add more flour as needed.
- When the dough is smooth, transfer it to a greased bowl and give it a turn or two so even the top of the dough is lightly greased. Then cover with a damp cloth and allow to rise in a warm place for an hour. If my house is cold, I will turn my oven to "warm," let it heat up, then turn it off and place the dough inside with the door cracked. The dough should double after an house. Then punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface so you can knead it for an additional five minutes.
- Divide the dough into two equal parts and place them each into a greased 9×5 loaf pan. Cover and allow to rise for an additional 45 minutes. The dough should once again double in size. Then place in a preheated oven for about 40 minutes at 350°F or until the bread is golden and sounds hollow when tapped. Remove from the oven and allow to cool before slicing. Enjoy!
