Welcome back! As part of our ongoing series of themed nights, it’s time for Chinese night and the dish of choice is Beef and Broccoli. Why Beef and Broccoli you might ask? The great thing about this dish is that it’s got a good helping of protein and veg. It’s not going to ruin whatever health goals you’ve set for yourself, and it’s versatile with your budget.
Before you get started, there are a few things to remember:
- You don’t have to use one cut of beef. Sirloin, skirt, or flank. Whatever you have on hand will work!
- Marinate-it’s important! This allows the flavors to break down and tenderize the meat. I promise you won’t regret it.
- Keep it hot! I don’t mean the spices, I mean your skillet. If you want to really sear your meat and keep that flavor in, then a hot skillet is a must.
Now you’re ready to make Chinese night happen! You can serve your Beef and Broccoli with white rice, brown rice, or take a leap and try making some homemade chow mein.
Beef and Broccoli
Ingredients:
- 2/3 c. soy sauce, divided
- 1/2 lime (juiced)
- 3 Tbsp. brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp. cornstarch, divided
- salt and pepper
- 1 lb. sirloin, skirt, or flank steak thinly sliced
- 2 Tbsp. vegetable oil
- 3 cloves minced garlic
- 1/3 c. beef broth
- 2 c. broccoli florets
- sesame seeds (garnish)
Process:
Begin by making your marinade! Start by whisking 1/3 c. soy sauce, lime juice, 1 Tbsp. brown sugar, and 1 Tbsp. corn starch together in a medium bowl. Once it’s fully mixed, go ahead and toss in your sliced steak, making sure to mix until it’s thoroughly coated. You can season with salt and pepper if you’d like, but make sure to marinate for at least thirty minutes in the fridge.
Next, get your skillet nice and hot. I’d recommend using a skillet like this one and turning your heat up to medium-high. Add in your oil, and when it’s hot, put your steak in. If you can make it fit in a single layer, great! If not, work it in batches. The goal is to sear for about two minutes a side to seal in that flavor. After searing, remove the steak and set aside so you can cook the broccoli.
After removing the steak, add in your garlic and cook until it’s golden brown. Then whisk in cornstarch, brown sugar, soy sauce, and if you want a little kick, some Sriracha. Bring the mixture to a soft simmer before adding in the broccoli. Keep simmering the broccoli until it gets tender, which should take about five minutes.
To finish, return the steak to the skillet and toss together. Garnish with sesame seeds and serve with rice! If you’re in the market for some darling dishes, try these out. Make sure you don’t forget to pick up some chopsticks! These ones are machine washable!
Next time you’re in the mood for some Chinese, skip the take out and try making some yourself. You won’t regret it!
